Update: Land Development Plan Steering Committee Meeting
January 28, 6:00 p.m., County Complex, Meeting Room #3

The Final Draft of the Countywide Land Development Plan for LaPorte County, Michigan City, the City of La Porte and all LaPorte County Communities has been completed by Duncan Associates, in association with Rundell Ernstberger Associates and Cooper Consulting Company.

Accompanying the Plan is the Plan Implementation Report. The report identifies planning actions and programs necessary to implement the Plan. Some of these include: adequate public facilities programs; targeted infrastructure investment; land acquisition programs; conservation easements; zoning ordinance changes that include cluster zoning, overlay zoning, a common system of zoning district names, definitions and other shared elements; modification of the subdivision ordinance provisions; capital improvements in particular areas or avoidance of certain capital improvements in certain areas; and intergovernmental cooperation on particular strategies.

With the completion of the Implementation Report, the Final Plan will be submitted to the respective Plan Commissions for public hearings. Once the Plan is approved by the respective Plan Commissions, it will be submitted to the Board of County Commissioners for LaPorte County, the Common Council of Michigan City, the Common Council of the City of LaPorte, and the Town Councils of Kingsbury, Kingsford Heights, La Crosse, Long Beach, Michiana Shores, Pottawattamie Park, Trail Creek, Westville, and Wanatah for adoption.

Upon adoption, it will serve each jurisdiction adopting it as the Comprehensive Plan required by Burns Indiana Code Title 36, Article 7, Chapter 4, 500 Series. If it is not adopted by a particular jurisdiction, it will still be effective in the jurisdictions that do adopt it – and may be used as a point of reference even by local governments that do not formally adopt it.

If you wish to submit ideas or ask questions at any stage in the process, please email Eric Kelly at eric@duncanplan.com.
