University Park, Texas

Zoning Ordinance

For the City of University Park, a landlocked community in central Dallas, Duncan Associates reformatted and modernized the existing zoning ordinance.

The University Park zoning update effort focused primarily on making the new ordinance a more contemporary and user-friendly document. In fact, the directive from the City was not to change any of the major policies of the old ordinance.

Through the use of standard word processing techniques, the look and feel of every page in the existing ordinance was improved. “Easy find” features, such as cross-references, page headers with chapter and section numbers, an index and other techniques were employed.

The update also gave the City the chance to fix minor problems with the ordinance such as:

-Separating review procedures from design standards
-Clarifying development review responsibilities
-Standardizing inconsistent definitions
-Replacing cumbersome dot-matrix illustrations with elegant hand-drawn graphics
-Converting appropriate text into tables
