Signs using digital LED technology are popping up everywhere, giving new meaning to the phrase “changeable copy.” Planners everywhere are being presented with sign permit applications for both off-premise billboards and on-premise signage that includes this type of display. In the April 2008 issue of Zoning Practice, Duncan Associates’ senior associate Marya Morris, AICP, describes how cities and counties have amended their sign ordinances to address the traffic safety and aesthetic impacts of such technology and summarizes the new and ongoing research taking place to quantify the effects of these signs on traffic safety.
